Here Are a Few Indoor Clean Air Activities for Kids

Hi friends!

You may have noticed that the sky looks dark and smoky lately due to the wildfires in Northern California. During wildfire season, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself safe from breathing harmful particles in the air due to wildfire smoke.

Did you know that children are more sensitive to air pollution? Since your respiratory systems are still developing, smoke from wildfires is incredibly harmful and can cause coughing, a scratchy throat, headaches, and sinus irritation. Remember, if you see or smell smoke, the best way to stay safe is to play indoors!

Here are 5 activities you can do to have fun indoors while you stay out of the smoke:

  1. Be Creative with Household Items

Just because you can’t play outside doesn’t mean you can’t create fun inside! Recycle household items, such as an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll, straws, boxes, or egg cartons, and use your imagination to build something new! Turn an empty Kleenex box into a robot, put rubber bands around an old cup and strum them to make music, put a string through some pasta noodles and make a necklace! Be creative with your inventions and see what you can make!

  1. Play in the Garage

Ask an adult if they can move their cars out of the garage so you have more room to play! You could use your scooter inside the garage, roller skate, or even play jump rope. It feels like you are outside without being exposed to the bad air quality.

  1. Variations of Sport Games

Bring a few of your favorite sporting activities inside! Set up an over-the-door basketball hoop with a foam ball, bowl in the living room, or play mini-golf! Try setting up your indoor sports in rooms with plenty of space like the living room, an empty bedroom, or the garage.

  1. Have a Dance Party

Have a dance party in your living room! Ask an adult if you can turn up the music and dance it out in a large open space like your living room. See if you can dim the lights or use glow sticks for some extra dance party fun.

  1. Create an Obstacle Course

I love a good obstacle course, especially one inside! Ask an adult to help you set up an obstacle course in a large area so you can spread out and let your imagination run wild. Use your imagination to help you come up with the perfect obstacle course. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Hula hoops to jump through
  • Line of tape to balance on
  • Couch cushions to hop between
  • Table to crawl under
  • Blanket over 2 chairs to crab walkthrough
  • Tupperware containers to hurdle over

I can’t wait to try out some of these indoor activities in my doghouse! I hope you all enjoy these activities as much as I will and thank you all for taking precautions to stay safe indoors until the air quality improves.
