What Does a Spare The Air Alert Mean, Anyway?
One of my roles as an air quality mascot is to help you learn all about air pollution—especially during Spare The Air season! Air pollution can negatively impact your health, especially on a Spare The Air day. But what does that mean? Let me explain.
It starts with understanding the Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI is what we use to measure air quality, and a higher number means more pollution is in the air. These numbers are grouped into categories ranging from ‘Good’ to ‘Hazardous.’
When the AQI is forecast to be 126 or higher, which falls in the ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ category, a Spare The Air alert is issued. This means everyone should take action to help Spare The Air. The best way to do this is to drive less because emissions from gas-powered cars are the main cause of ground-level ozone (smog).
Air pollution affects everyone, and we can all do our part to help reduce it! Grown-ups and kids alike can take action and help Spare The Air.
Here are a few ways you can help:
- Ask your grown-up to check the AQI. The forecast is posted daily on Facebook and X, and the current conditions in your area can be found on the Spare The Air
- Visit the All About Air Pollution page on my very own website, Scooter’s World, to learn more about summertime air pollution and share information about Spare The Air with your friends and family!
- Get creative! There are many ways to have fun while you Spare The Air. For example, if you’re headed to the same place, ask your parents to plan a carpool with friends and family and play games along the way!
Remember – any reduction in vehicle emissions can help improve our air quality!
Until next time,
Scooter
