Make Spook-tacular Treats for Your Dog

With Halloween season around the corner, now is the time for fall treats and baked goods! Pies, breads, and cookies, oh my – I am starting to get hungry just thinking about it. What is your favorite fall treat or snack? My favorite goodies are homemade, pumpkin peanut butter dog treats!

Homemade treats are important to me because I can control the ingredients that I include. I choose to make food that does not have the same preservatives, fats, or chemicals that regular store-bought treats can contain, which helps me feel healthier and have more energy. The recipe I am sharing today is simple to make and has only five ingredients, which you can probably find in your kitchen. If you need to run to the store for an item, make sure to check-in with an adult, and try riding a bike, walking, or taking a scooter to help Spare The Air!

Once you have the ingredients, ask an adult for help, and start baking.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup, pumpkin puree
  • 1/3 cup, peanut butter (No xylitol listed in the ingredients)
  • 2 ½ cups, whole wheat flour
  • ¾ tsp, cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs

Be sure that the peanut butter used for these treats does not contain xylitol! Xylitol is a sweetener that is okay for humans to eat but is toxic to dogs.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°. You will need a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs with a mixer on medium-high speed.
  3. Add in cinnamon for flavor, and flour to form a dough. Mix until the dough is stiff.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and roll it out to a ¼ in. thickness. Use cookie cutters to create your desired Halloween shapes!
  5. Place cookies on the baking sheet, and bake for 20 – 25 minutes, or until the edges begin to turn golden brown. Allow the cookies to completely cool before eating.

Ta-da! We now have a Halloween treat that is both human and dog friendly. Eat them, decorate them for fun, or share them with a friend – that is my favorite part.

I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween!
